Intervention Class: focusMATHStudents are selected for this specialized intensive intervention program based upon math need. focusMATH provides math support in addition to the regular classroom instruction.
The research-based intervention program called focusMATH provides concise lessons built on the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Focal Points to provide explicit and systematic instruction on foundational skills. Math skills that are emphasized include computation, concepts, word problems, and fractions. In a small group setting with attention to individual needs, students will be instructed through the use of manipulatives, vocabulary, and practice sheets (workbook) to focus on understanding, proficiency, and problem solving within each math topic. This intensive math intervention program utilizes instructional models along with strategic questions that let students verbalize their understanding. In focusMATH, students gain experience with core concepts and skills which lead to deeper understanding, computational fluency, and the ability to make meaning of mathematics. focusMATH students work on math activities provided in a booklet housed in a folder kept in the classroom. When students complete the Topic, they receive a special certificate and affix a selected sticker to display on the classroom bulletin board! Please remind your child to use the following Best Practices: Bring a pencil with eraser; Be an active listener; Be patient and fair; Do your best and stay on task; Ask for help when needed. Math Intervention Class is scheduled replacing Allied Arts. After 12 weeks (two terms) assessment occurs to determine continuation or exiting the program.
